She didn't know what to expect.

She had tossed all of her belongings into a suitcase in a bit of a frenzy. 3 pairs of boots, 2 pairs of jeans (one skinny, dark. another washed, casual.) Countless t-shirts (do they wear t-shirts there?) Her favorite hoody; and finally enough coats to warm not only herself but her neighbors as well. Upon her arrival, cool but comfortable temperatures prevailed. A slight breeze hid her sigh of relief. I'm not out of place, she thought. All is well. Now I can adjust to the easiest part of this journey: learning a new language.

Its always easier to leave, than to be left.

Been awhile.

Travels, travails, and a teaching opportunity have contributed to a lack of posts, and altogether communication. This piece was done shortly after the oil spill down south. The brown pelican is the Louisiana state bird, and I felt it appropriate to create something after the blowout happened. I will make prints, and a portion of those proceeds will go towards wildlife conservation in the area. Check back for an update soon.

I am currently in Seattle for my taper meet, meaning the "end of season go fast meet". We are in good spirits as a team, and I am looking forward to going fast in the water. Results can be found here.

I began my professional relationship with the company Vedavoo around the fall of 2009. I was talking with a friend today, and they asked me "what does your work for Vedavoo look like?" And I thought, "why haven't I posted any of my work for this excellent outdoor-oriented client?" So today I am going to remedy this little problem!
Vedavoo was founded by my friend and former high school classmate Scott Hunter. He's a swell guy, with business smarts and vision to boot. I was excited when he sought me out for art, as I have always wanted to delve into wilderness-oriented work! My designs are available in the shop section. Here are a few others:

The thing I enjoy about Scott's company, aside from the fact that the gear is made for mountain folk, by mountain folk, is that Vedavoo really does encourage you to get outside...

New Year Deer, Nationals

Happy New Year people.

Just to recap, last year was pretty fun. This year is going well so far, with new work and inspiration pouring out of my ears. Yes, there is a pun there. I traveled to Short Course Nationals in Seattle, had a great time, learned a lot and saw some friends. 56/76 swimmers in my event is a starting point for me. I didn't get the time I wanted, but the value of going was immeasurable. What I got was experience. It gave me new inspiration in the water, especially after watching some of the best swimmers in the world compete.

Just a heads up, I will be having a Solo Show at IndyInk in June. The deer at top is a preview of the piece I am currently knocking out for that show. I'm trying to keep it under wraps, as well as the rest of my work for it. I find that I listen a little to well to others' opinions, and want this show to be completely shaped from my mind and interests. It will be a glimpse into where I am going as an artist and person. Whoa. Deep. No pun intended.

I was inspired to post a little more often, as I have this time on my hands, as well as new work to show. So here is another post, just for you. These two pieces are more of that "getting out of the box" motif. The abstract number is the third in the series I posted last. I may have sold them today. (Yessss). The other is a Phil Hale rip-off. I cannot find the painting he did on a copper background, but its completely brilliant. The green he uses is perfect with the copper foil. Anyhow, I wanted to try it out, and this is a study I did of a head. Its about 3x3".

I have a meet today and tomorrow at Arapahoe High School Pool. Its our first meet of the season, so it will be a good indication of where the team is in the midst of our training.

Whoa! September 18? That was my last post. Well. Time flies when you live in a pool. And look at that! Its cold outside! I apologize to those of you who follow this humble little blog. Wait no more, for there is new work! So if you like/dislike this stuff, leave a comment! I'm thinking of the Pink Floyd song, "is there anybody out there"?

These little birds are about 2 X 2". I drew the birds in Micron, and then finished them off in oil. As fun as they are, they actually got me a job. I am going to be painting "tiles" much like these guys for a client's kitchen. I get to paint 8 of them with a kitchen theme. Lettuce, eggs, more chickens, a cow perhaps? I'm pretty excited about it, probably because I love food.

These next pieces I created have kind of pulled me out of a creative slump. Not that I don't have ideas, but more along the lines of execution of said ideas. Your thoughts...?

Brief Update for Swims!

Hello there-
Just letting everyone know that I am back in Denver now, after a great past month. After racing at the Speedo Champions Series (Western Sectionals) meet at Mt. Hood, I took 2 weeks off to go mountain biking. The team I swim for, the University of Denver Hilltoppers, won the meet by over 500 points (men and women combined). Results can be found here My name can be searched under "Lang" and will pop up quite a few times.
I dropped 10 seconds in my 200 breaststroke, getting a 2:28.18, placing me 13th overall. I was very excited, and satisfied with this swim. I ended up dropping 3 seconds in my 100 breast, achieving a 1:06.4. This placed me 6th overall after Finals. Here I am collecting my medal.
Unfortunately, I missed qualifying for the US Open by 1 second. I am very happy with my times, however, and am excited to go after those times starting this fall. The good news is that with the times I swam in my events, I was put on the "B" Relays for the 200 medley and 400 medley relays. I was honored to represent my team and make points! Both of the B relays took 5th overall, with our A relays winning and breaking both meet and state records. A great trip indeed!
Now that I have more time to paint, I have a few jobs to take care of... The first is a Skateboard deck I started work on before my travels, and have been working on steadily for the last few weeks. I am also designing t-shirts for Vedavoo. The other is the Caterpillar from "Through the Looking Glass". Exciting and fun projects! More to come, as I upload some photos.

May Result in Loss of Energy

Hello All

I have returned from my Swim Racing in Ft. Collins. Overall I was pleased with how I swam. I managed to drop time in all of my events with the exception of the 200IM. On Friday I swam the 50 Freestyle and dropped a tenth of a second. This was fine, as it felt really great. Saturday morning's session saw me drop one second in my 100 freestyle, as well as 2 seconds in my 200 Breast. The best part was coming back into finals seeded 7th, and dropping 4 seconds from my best time in the AM session to place 6th overall in Finals. I was very pleased with that swim.
Sunday Morning, being the 4th session of swimming for me, was tiring but eventful. I managed to drop one second in my 100 breast; the event I was aiming for the US Open with. This placed me third going into Finals, next to my teammates at TOPS. Going into Finals I was confident, relaxed, and focused. I really went for it in Finals, managing to drop one more second off the morning's time, but still a few seconds short from the OPEN. The next big race is Northwest Sectionals in Seattle. I am excited to rest and go fast!

Ft. Collins meet at Epic this weekend

Just a quick post before I head off to bed... I am racing in Ft. Collins this weekend (June 19-21). I ordered shirts today at INDYINK. They will be available at the show! Prints are being made of Antonio the Violinist as well as Clive the Lute Player.
This weekend I am attempting to qualify for the U.S. Open being held in Seattle this August. Essentially I would be racing against those awesome swimmers that did not make the U.S World Championships Team, as well as those swimmers that qualify for the Open between now and then. I am really excited to race! As my friend Casey always says, "I'm like a caged animal!"

Inspiration from the Old

My upcoming show (see previous post) has got me to do two things: 1) create more work and 2) create different and exciting work.

I recently went out to the First Friday art walk on Sante Fe in Denver with a few of my Swimming team-mates from TOPS. The work I saw was sometimes exciting, a lot of times abstract, and a few times disappointing. I am not an art critic, but being that I have fairly high standards for my own paintings, I have an eye for what works and what doesn't. I got something out of seeing this new work, however. The way I felt that night was similar to that feeling I got in school while wandering the hallways, checking out what the Fine Artists were painting; what the Graphic Designers were creating, and seeing what Sculptors were constructing. This always got me excited to think outside of the traditional illustration box I was sometimes stuck in.
In my first 2 years of college, I had an assignment to paint an abstract piece in Acrylic. It was a challenge because I wanted parts of this piece to represent a wet sidewalk on a rainy day. (Representing ideas in abstract work? For shame Elliot for shame!) I did it nonetheless...

Now, ask yourself as I did, "what the hell were you thinking?" If you get an answer please email me... Regardless of why I painted this, I was looking it over the other day. It got me thinking about the work for my show. The gears were turning with an amalgam of First Friday art and this piece... Hmmmm... I incorporated some strategically placed paint splatters, as well as some representational imagery in this new piece. Here is a sneak peek:

It will all make sense eventually- when I'm dead perhaps, and the Anthropologist has dug up my teeth and has moved on to studying primitive post-modern pop-art in 100 years. Unless of course I have been revived from my cryogenic chamber along with Walt Disney. In which case I can explain my process. See you at the SHOW!

This is a portrait of my "Gopa" (Grandfather+Opa=Gopa), Friedl. I painted this for his 90th birthday, which a number of my family and I celebrated in Santa Fe. Season's Greetings.

Here is my Postcard image for Christmas, that I will send out this week. I started feeling that the sense of wonder I once felt as a kid disappeared some time ago. But what was it that intrigued me about this time of year? I am going to say that the mythology and history of Christmas inspired me. (Obviously it marks someone's birthday). Its an interesting time in our lives, to say the least. What a time of year where we feel that snow is not just cold, but magical. Where gifts are still a surprise instead of an expectation. Where a fire's warmth is truly felt. And the food, oh man the food! Not to mention the delicious holiday beer that comes from microbreweries. My favorite seasonal beer still comes out of the Dillon Dam Brewery up in Summit County. (www.dambrewery.com) It truly captures the taste of the season.
That's really the point. I want to capture the magic of the season. As my friend Anthony Stabley always says, the flavor. What's the flavor we're going for? What is the mood... What is the flavor for you this season?
So, in retrospect: this postcard image is for you. I hope you feel the wonder of the season I once felt as a kid. Looking up in the night sky for reindeer, making sure Santa ate all of the cookies we laid out, and giving the reindeer the carrots we peeled for them. Hopes and dreams, and pleasant surprises. Its all coming back to me now...

A Re-Drawn Sketch, 12 hours, and a Finish

I Love Illustration. LOVE IT! Not only does illustration push me to think outside of the box, it makes figure out new ways to turn work around in less than 24 hours. This last job was fun, but also exciting. Here is the breakdown: After turning in the roughs (last post) the client went with a less cut-and-dry sketch, with 4 walls. Here is the sketch I turned in, and yes I did it in less than 1 minute.
After getting approval for the new drawing, I went to work on the finished illustration. Unfortunately I did not scan a step by step production, I was in too much of a rush! Nonetheless, I finished the piece at 11:00pm, and set it out to dry for the night. I sent it off this morning, and am now off to work. What a life! I will post the final once the newspaper prints!

Here is the under-painting for my Halloween piece. Basically a map, and flat washes of color. It is an ugly stage, to say the least. I laid in a brilliant blue wash for my skin tones, and an orange "mood" color. By the time I am done, I would like to have created a "fade away" effect, similiar to that of the American Illustrator C. Coles Phillips. Except, it will be a fade away pumpkin... right. I'll post again when I have some oil on the piece. Cheers!

Hi Everyone,
Just a few news items while I have a moment. I was published in the Saturday International and National Edition of the Wall St. Journal on September 30. I was really excited but also a little on edge while I created the piece. I am so happy to have finally worked for them! I will post the illustration later...
I have an upcoming speaking engagement at The Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, concerning what I have done with my life after college and how I afford to eat and pay rent as an artist (hint: swimming). I am in Casper, WY visiting family and friends for the weekend and am coming back a little more relaxed and motivated than the last couple of weeks. I spoke with my good friend Zachary Pullen (zacharypullen.com) who is a great motivator and inspiration, and saw some new work of his. Always beautiful and fun work. I am leaving some halloween-type sketches today, some pen and ink I drew a few weeks ago. Enjoy.

Hi everyone, here is a new piece I painted this week. I have met with the Wall St. Journal, and am awaiting a call from them concerning some work! I also dropped off my portfolio at Rolling Stone, and visited The Society of Illustrators today. They were hanging a new show in the Dining Room/Bar on the 3rd Floor, and it was amazing. I was able to get up close and personal to the pieces, and stare at a huge Dean Cornwell painting. I was humbled, and truly cherished what illustration is. I'll post my next piece when I get a chance!

I know what you're thinking- "Why is Elliot writing a BLOG about R. Kelly?" Well, truth be told, I designed the sets for his now popular video-series "Trapped in the Closet". Thanks to my friend Anthony Stabley (anthonystabley.com), I had the pleasure of creating the diner set, church, and shady warehouse office. The videos can be seen at ifc.com/static/sections/kelly/trapped.html The diner is in Chapters 14-15, the church is in 18 and 19, and my assumption is that the warehouse is in the upcoming chapters. A post before New York

I am leaving... I am spending a month in New York. I brainstormed this trip last year when I found out my cousin moved to Brooklyn. Upon his invite, I did not hesitate to accept and plan a trip. As an artist, he understands what New York means to illustrators. He was super-cool in letting me stay with him for a month. I am going to make some contacts, and hopefully get some illustration work in the city. I felt it appropriate to make my first post while getting ready to go, so I could more or less chronicle my trip. I would be lying if I said I was not feeling a bit nervous, but my excitement balances out the tickle in my stomach. I leave late tonight, so I will be getting into JFK bright and early. Hopefully the humidity isn't beyond 80% when I get in. I am leaving an image I created last week, tentatively titled, "America's Queens". I felt an obligation to comment on how big we are as Americans. Enjoy. For Colorado, see you in a month; New York? See you tomorrow.
